1.) The play opens with Antonio, the merchant, admitting that he is sad, but not knowing why. Think of times when you’ve been sad. Have you always understood exactly why, or has your sadness sometimes seemed strange to you? Explain.
Sadness is often a situational feeling. Sometimes, we fully understand the reason behind the sadness, and sometimes we don’t because it’s masked behind another feeling. There are times where you just can’t express what you are feeling because there are few words to express it. Feelings such as anger can mask that sadness.

2.) In Shakespeare’s time, lending money for interest was called “usury” and was generally considered immoral. How have attitudes changed since then?
Today we live in a very capitalistic-based world with various dominant countries. Such practices are now done very often because although there can be backlashes, there is still a possibility for economic gain. It is generally accepted in the world that we live in today because that is what society has practiced throughout the recent decades. Attitudes have changed towards accepting this practice rather than shunning it.

3.) Think of the recent banking crisis and the state of today’s economy. Do you think it’s all right to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may not have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back?
It’s often very risky to rely on a person's word without evidence to back it up. This risk has led to various banking consequences in history that tend to repeat itself. It’s ruined many relationships in the economic world. However, the lending of money based on reputation/word has also led to many improvements in our society. This causes people to follow the norm of trust, since it builds the economy better. We think that if their word/reputation is known to have positive feedback, then it’s fine to lend them a large amount of money.

4.) This play includes romantic love stories and also ethnic and religious conflict. How well do you expect these elements to blend?
Romance and religious/ethnic conflict don’t blend very well together from a technical point. The characters in them go through a lot of conflict trying to achieve a solution that satisfies whatever religious belief that is blocking the romance and preventing them from having the freedom that they seek. In a figurative perspective, it makes for a great, compelling story that captures the audience because there is such a great dramatic suspense.

    1) Whenever I am sad, most of the time there is a reason for it. I get sad if my pet dies, a family member dies, if I play bad in a game, when watching sad movies, and when i get into fights with people. If I do get sad randomly or for no reason, it normally happens during a specific week out of the month.

    2) Attitudes have changed since Shakespears time because now days, getting loans with interest is something that almost everybody has done. College, buying houses, buying cars, etc. is very expensive and many people don't have that kind of money just lying around. Due to society changing, and pricier living expenses, borrowing money with interest has become very common.

    3) No, I do not think it's right for someone to lend another person large amounts of money based on their word, because you can't trust that they'll pay you back. They need to borrow money because they don't have money, so it would be difficult for them to pay it all back. Without solid evidence that they could pay you back, there is no reason you should loan money to them in the first place.

    4) I do not expect these elements to blend well at all. When two people fall in love, they don't care about what their parents will think. If you love someone, you should be able to get past their religion and ethnic differences. Love is about caring for someone no matter how different they are.

    1) Theres times that we could explain why we're sad, but other times we also can't explain it. I've had those moments where I was sad or afraid, but never knew why. I guess me and my partner discussed that even though you might go through hard times, there are just times you're sad no matter what and its just a part of growing up.

    2) We discussed that how attitudes change to morality towards money is that it's considered an act of kindness and generosity nowadays, instead of how it was considered it being immoral.

    3) We discussed that it really depends on the situation. If someone is lending money out of good intentions, despite of the fact that the person can't pay back, then it's a nice thing to do, but if the person promises to pay the person back, and never keeps their word, then it's perhaps not even a good idea to trust them in the first place, especially in this economy.

    4) We discussed that this type of story would work well, because we've seen many stories like this, including how some people can't be in love because of ethnicity and religion or how despite these factors, they'll still be in love. It wouldn't be a surprise that this is on of those stories.

1)Have you always understood exactly why, or has your sadness sometimes seemed strange to you? Explain.

It depends on the circumstances that we are in. When we are aware of our own sadness, it is usually triggered by an event that has hurt us however, if it is not that then, we often get confused why we’re sad. To illustrate, sometimes when we are just doing our daily routine a sudden sadness would struck us for no reason. Because, of that it’d leave us confused since the reason is unknown to us. To conclude, it just depends on the circumstances if a tragic event has hit us or not.

    2) In Shakespeare’s time, lending money for interest was called “usury” and was generally considered immoral. How have attitudes changed since then?

Attitudes have not changed since back then. Loaning interest is still hated among people. Since they have to pay more than they have to. In the definition of usury even stated, “the illegal action”. Since Shakespeare’s time, people have been lending more money, especially the bank, who charges interest and the original price of the loan, especially in student loans for college they charge interest loans. Which is why so many people are getting in debt because of usury and the people hate that there is interest on loans.

3)Think of the recent banking crisis and the state of today’s economy. Do you think it’s all right to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may not have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back?

No. Although, they may be associated with a reputable name if there is minimal to none concrete evidence of them being able to pay back then, it is not alright. That’s because as sad as it is money dictates someone’s life and, since it holds so much value we would not be willing to offer my money that guides me through a comfortable life to be put at stakes. It is just not worth losing a large sum of money to a person that is not proven to be reliable of paying paying back.

    4) This play includes romantic love stories and also ethnic and religious conflict. How well do you expect these elements to blend?

We expect these elements to blend well into the story because, it will add more dramatization. to compel the audience. These three elements still play a big role in our society today which will make it more relatable for the viewer and not as confusing. For example, religious conflict is still prevalent in our society, these days there is islamophobia which is a fear of Muslim people. This was started due to terrorists that claimed they were, ‘Muslim’ and because of that people started to generalize people who practiced this religion to all be extremists. By adding religious conflict into the story the people are able to connect that with the current situation likewise with the other two elements. To conclude, the three elements are able to blend together because they are relatable to the audience.

    1. We both have come to the point where we felt sad but didn’t know why. We found a potential reason for why we felt this way. This may be due to a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. The simplest everyday things could make a girl emotional. For example, we could watch a show and cry or we could overthink about random things and start to cry.

    2. In the 21st century, borrowing money is not considered as “immoral”. It is actually very common in this generation to lend money because people need loans from banks to support their daily life. Also there are sometimes homeless people on the street that ask for money because they are going through tough times.

    3. We believe that lending money to any person, no matter what their status is, is alright. Nowadays, we could sue someone if they don’t pay us back. Since this is the technology generation, the bank keeps track of loans that are given on a daily basis. The loaners have came up with the idea of interest. If the person receiving the loan does not pay the loaner then the loaner will add in a percentage of interest. That way has prevented people from escaping their debts.

    4. We believe that romance, religion, and ethnicity blend really well together because we have watched dramas that had the same concept of The Merchant Of Venice. For example, a girl could fall in love with a guy with a different ethnicity and belief as her. So their differences could prevent each other from being together. But if they are truly in love, they would overcome the religious and ethnic barrier.

  8. 1) The play opens with Antonio, the merchant, admitting that he is sad, but not knowing why. Think of times when you’ve been sad. Have you always understood exactly why, or has your sadness sometimes seemed strange to you? Explain.

No, we have never experienced any sadness that was strange to us. Although, there have been times where we understood why we were sad such as the time when Zak's rabbit died. He cried for days and was very sad. Also, I experienced sadness and understood why I was sad when I lost my championship basketball game. I was sad because I worked so hard to get to the championships but in the end we still lost. These are both experiences where we understood when we were sad.

2.) In Shakespeare’s time, lending Money for interest was called “usury” and was generally considered immoral. How have attitudes changed since then?

Lending money from interest changed from then back then, people would lend money just to gain more interest which was immoral. Nowadays, it is common to lend money since of the high taxes and college debts. Interest is the exchange for the act of lending money in the first place. Interest is to keep both sides equal. The longer you wait to pay it back results in the more money you will have to pay back.

3.) Think of the recent Banking crisis and the state of today’s economy. Do you think it’s all right to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may not have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back?

I believe that in order for someone to lend you money, you have to gain trust with them. You can't just lend someone a certain amount of money if you don't even know them. they could be lying about who they are and just trying to scam you for money. Although, if you know and trust a person, under those circumstances I believe that lending that person money is fine.

4.) This play includes romantic love stories and also ethnic and religious conflict. How well do you expect these elements to blend?

T These conflicts will not blend well with people in a relationship because the couple will not see eye to eye every time. There will be disagreements which can lead to arguments. When a couple argues too much or disagree too much, that relationship usually does not last long. This conflict will not blend well because even though they are in love, they will argue most of the time.

    1. Sometimes sadness could come from something that the person was never aware of. People often cry in movies and feel what others feel whenever they witness it. Sometimes we just cry because we feel that it's necessary. It never really seemed strange whenever a person is sad, because everyone is sad at some point, because we're humans. It's just that certain things make certain people react to them and become emotional.

    2. Attitudes have changed since that time period. Right now, it isn't technically illegal. As long as the money wasn't received in an illegal way, then lending money for interest is acceptable. Back then, lending money for interest was to be thought differently. But today, it's easier to lend money without others thinking that it's "usury."

    3. It's pretty common to judge people based on how they look, and our judgements are usually or likely right. It's not exactly safe to rely or believe every person's word. People would usually believe someone who has the image that they know takes responsibilities seriously. I honestly think it's better to have evidence that the person is actually able to make money or at least have a job that lends them money than giving money who have the lowest chances of returning or paying back. Overall, it is all right with how it is now.

    4. Ethnic and religious conflict with love often don't go well together. Ethnic conflict is often because of pickiness and unwillingly desired choice. Religious conflict also takes part by the use of certain rules which limits people in their relationships. Many stories often have these elements as problems that create conflict. This is mainly because these things aren't always cooperative with each other.

1.) Whenever I been sad I would know why I was sad because my grandpa passed away and he was really important to me but I would get over him passing away because I know he is watching me from above and in my heart.

    2.)
I feel like it changed since then because now days people are giving things for money. And they way to make money is to sell the things you don’t need. I gave gave money for interest by giving my friend nice shoes and he gave me money for it.

3.) I don’t think people should lend someone a large amount of money even though they said that they will pay you back because people will probably take long to pay back and they will make you wait for a long time.

4.) I expect this elements to blend in the wrong way because people will discriminate other people because of their race and because of their religion. It is hard to love someone who has a different religion because someone has to go with the other persons ways.
